Writing prompts for bi/pan characters

Bi/pan characters are characters who identify as bisexual or pansexual, though they can also include asexual characters who identify as biromantic or panromantic. To spread awareness and help support more representation, I’ve put together over 22 writing prompts for bi/pan characters.

Both bi and pan people are attracted to multiple genders, and there are many potentially harmful stereotypes for both identities. I’ve included a spread of positive, neutral, and negative prompts to encompass as many experiences as possible.

While I’ve put bi and pan characters together for these writing prompts, I hope to later have separate writing prompts posts for each. When I do, I’ll link them here!

You might also enjoy my LGBTQ+ writing prompts for every genre.

22 writing prompts for bi/pan characters

You can take just one prompt or combine any of the following for one story! Every prompt is entirely up to your interpretation.

You’ll find prompts for characters, words, settings, tropes, plotlines, and something sensory below.

Characters: An artist. A comedian. A party planner.

Words: Attraction. Gender-inclusive. Myths. Pink. Stickers. Understanding.

Settings: A convention. A festival. A pride parade.

Tropes: Bi-Wildered. Extra Parent Conception. One True Threesome.

Plotlines:

  • Educating others was never meant to be their job.
  • They’ve been burned so many times, now they practically introduce themself on dates with their sexuality.
  • Someone assumes that they must also be polyamorous, and now they can’t stop thinking about the possibility.
  • Dating isn’t just about finding a romantic partner for them, it’s also about finding others who understand their feelings for others.
  • When they enter the room, they’re surprised at how wonderfully queer everyone looks.
  • Their heart skips when they see an advert for a club’s “dating regardless of gender” night.

Sensory: Vibrant.

For even more inspiration, try incorporating these bi/pan character ideas. They can give you a place to start crafting a character, or can add quirks and backstory to an existing character.

  • A baker who can’t stop making “pan”cake puns.
  • A person who’s been asked so many times that they have a “No, that doesn’t mean that I’m into you” badge to show people.
  • The perfect matchmaker, because they’ve personally vetted most of the blind dates.
  • Someone who is always the first person to cheer you up after a break-up.
  • A hairdresser with the brightest, prettiest window display you could imagine.
