If you’re a writer looking for a gender-neutral name, I’ve created a gender-neutral name generator with 1300 names! With 50 names for every letter of the alphabet, I hope this generator will help you find inspiration or the perfect name for your characters.
Names range from more traditionally gender-neutral names like Morgan, Holland, and Sky to more modern gender-neutral names and nicknames. I’ve tried to give a broad variety to the names here, but I have other resources linked below for even more choice.
Just click the Randomise button below to generate 12 names!

How to use the gender-neutral name generator
To use the generator, all you need to do is click Randomise every time you want to generate 12 new names. The generator will then cycle through all 1300 names, bringing you fresh ideas and maybe a repeat if you’re unlucky. Once you click the Randomise button, you won’t be able to get the names back, so make sure to write down any you’d like to keep hold of.
My favourite way of using the gender-neutral name generator is to quickly come up with a few options for names and then add them to a list to use for my writing later. Or, if I need a quick name for a character in a story, I’ll generate 12 names and pick my favourite of them and continue writing.
While I created this as a resource for writers, if you’re here looking for a new name for yourself or even for a baby, congratulations! I hope this helps, and make sure to check the meaning of the name before committing to it. You don’t want to name yourself or your child something like ‘Eris’ without considering whether you want people to think of the Greek goddess of discord… Names like that are included here because often it’s a bonus conflict for our characters!
What is a gender-neutral name?
A gender-neutral name is just that: a name that can be used regardless of gender. While most used for non-binary people and characters, a gender-neutral name can be used for anyone.
Unlike masculine and feminine names, there’s no (or not as much of an) assumption of the person’s gender.
A masculine name is one that is used predominantly for men, so people assume that anyone with that name is a man. The same goes for feminine names, with predominant usage being for women, so assumptions are that people with that name are women.
More gender-neutral character name resources
I’ve created a number of resources containing gender-neutral names, some of which use names from the generator and some that don’t. If you’re looking for something in particular, hopefully these help!
